It is the grace of Gurudeva that has given a chance to me to write something about the life sketch fo the Gurudeva. Those great people whose deeds are always for doing good to mankind they are not counted as man in this age of peaceless, destructive and inhuman society. They as a part of God spread their love in the society in such a way which enables man to acquire prosperity and peace not only in life but also everlasting pleasure for their future life. When such people making no harm to others attain such quality of spreading only wellbeing of the society than they are accepted as incarnation in the world. Respected Shri Devendrasharan Brahmachari (Mauni Baba) Maharaj life is full of such charismatic activities for which people in Bihar (Mithila), Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal accepts and acknowledges him as an incarnation of God. To describe such people is not easy because Gurudev is God and God is considered as "Neti-Neti" with my shallow knowledge, what even I am translating about him is on the basis of what I have heard from others and realised from my innerself. If I am proved wrong for something written about him that should also be considered as a result of his charismas and for that the writer will be sorry and apologing..

Personal Details

Mithila has a proud privilege to be a birth place of several knowledgeable people, Saints, Karmkandi and Kings from ancient time. In that series, in Kalikal, Sri Devendra Sharan Brahmachari (Mauni Baba) was born in 1950, on the bank of river Khirohi (ancient name Dughdawati) in village Muraith in old Darbhanga District. This village is famous because of its nearness to Uchaitha Shaktipith and also the Ashram of Muni Gautam where God Rama transformed a stone as Ahilya. Ashram of Jagyabalklya, Shringi-Vringi, birth place of famous poet Vidyapati. Banganga and Shivnagar is also situated near village Muraitha. His father late Narmadeshwar Jha was a policeman and mother Kushumawati was a religious housewife. She belonged to Mishra family of Basantpur praised for their honesty, integrity, good behaviour and kindness to the society. The first son of his father died in the age of 3 years only.

His father late Narmadeshwar Jha visited Varanasi on some official duty and during that visit he got a chance to see Neem Karauli Baba who blessed him and assured him that he would be blessed with four sons, in which first son will be a thinker and rest three others will lead his generation.

After one year Devendra was born. He was really unique. He consumed about 3 Kg. Ghee once in his very childhood.

When he was going for his Mundan Sanskar to Deoghar he began to sing a song -

Chal Ghora Chal
Chal Meri Shadi Me Chal
Chal Ghora Chal.

More about Mauni Baba

And he was so happy and melodious that Tangawala became astonished and overwhelmed. After schooling, he studied in Marwari College, Darbhanga till inter and he was admitted in Radhakrishna Goenka College, Sitamarhi, Bihar in 1971 for Graduation. He graduated with Hons. in Chemistry. During his study he came to know that his friend Vijay Kumar Jha is a son of known Pt. Shyamkant Jha (Shastri Baba) who was famous teacher of Vedas, Ramayan, Tantra and Jyotish. Devendra got some hint and alongwith his friend Vijay Kumar met Shastri Baba. Shastri Baba seeing only the face of Devendra could know that the boy is marvelous and is a rebirth of same sadhu. He gave him 'gurumantra' and called him Brahmachari from that day only. Sri Devndra adopted the living of Brahmachari and started wearing dhoti, gangee and gamchha. He took the blessings of his Gurumata Smt. Durga Jha and went to Hazaribagh to take the blessings permission of his father.

Sri Devendra had expressed his desire to his father that he would be doing Tapasya on some burning ghat. Father remembered the saying of Neemkaroli Baba and agreed to his Tapsya but with a suggestion that he should do 'Tapsya' at village Laganma burning ghat where his relatives may supply him Fruits and may visit to see him off and on. Devendra agreed to it ad started his Tapsya on burning ghat at the bank of Khiroi river to about 13 months. People of the surrounding areas always felt hat somebody is standing there in the Ashram to guard to saint and they had also heard thundering noises near that place. Who ever went there to offer fruits they were avised not to say anything of Ashram to anybody else outside. People say that Devendra carried a big chunk of stone which was not carriable even by more that 10 people. That stone is still there and devotees had plastered it and erected a cottage there.

There were many occasional visitors. They saw chirping of the birds and hissing of snakes in the Ashram. It is a belief that during any such Tapsya some obstacle also occur. After the Tapsya when a Vishnu Yagya was being performed, a storm wanted to put some obstacle. When Brahmachari wanted to stop that he was advised by his Guru to pray Vayudeva and as he prayed the storm was stopped forthwith. In 1978-79 when Ramdhun yagna was being held on the bank of Khirohi river water very thin and water became scare for the devotees. Bhaktas felt the paucity of water and approached Brahmacharijee and on the advice of his Guru again, praised the river and the river became full of water then and there. This incident was repeatedly narrated by the Pandits Sri Ramanand Mishra and Pt. Sri Babu Saheb Mishra on several such occasions.

Influenced by his religious attitude late Parvati Bai surrendered her life for the services to Brahmachari Baba (Mauni Baba), who used to participate in religious activities at Rani Sati Temple, Sitamarhi, Bihar with his friends late Vijay Kumar Jha and Sri Ram Babu and by which late Parvati Bai was deeply infleunced.

Seeing the nature of Baba his father wanted to get him married and he approached Shastri Jee his guru to influence Brahmachari Jee for marriage. Here in Dalli he met his old friend Sri Rishi Chandra Jha who gave Baba hearty welcome. He was given fruits and after that when asked about a suitable place for Tapasya, they took him to Mahamaya. The place was completely out of reach for common people. Baba stayed there and Rishi Chandra cameback alone to Rajhara. Smt. and Shri Jha were very much influenced by the supernatural performance of Mauni Baba.

About Mahamaya

In newly established Chhattisgarh province, Mahamaya is a small hill in Durg District. It was a part of Dandkaranya in Ramayan age. During British period Mahamaya hill in 1927 delcared as F.S. later on Mines Department of the Government divided this place in 3 category of Mines, as Mahamaya Mines, Rajhara Mines and Dalli Mines. The whole area is full of iron-ore. The whole area was known as Mahamaya because of the old Mahamaya Temple there. Several Tribes were living in the area since Ramayana age. The tribal people worship Banjaran Devi, Buddha Dev and Garh Mata and they sing a song known as Jagar geet with the help to their chief priest, Slesta Vega. The song is to arouse Devi. In the Mahamaya Temple, the images of Vishnu, Mahamaya and Shiva is inscribed on walls in different separate caves.

The whole area was under the protection and supervision of local Lohara Zamindars. After sometime the whole area was dilapidated and remained the place of congregation of Tribals for their Bhoj and worship of Devi by their sacrificing blood. When Mauni Baba came there the devine light spreaded in the whole area. the devotees, Mahanths, and Upadhyas had contributed a good deal for that.

The present Temple is now full of glory. It appears that the area of the Temple is completely separated from the hill. The area is surrounded by a deep canal filled with water known as small Triveni. There is a Ganesh Temple on the bank of this Triveni. Ganesh is made of a stone. Devotees take bath in Triveni, worship Ganesh and comes to worship in Mahamaya Temple. Mahamaya temple is about 80 steps above Ganesh temple. If you sit at the Mandap of Mahamaya Temple you can look all the hills and the beautiful charming surrounding. If you stay in Mahamaya Temple during the night you will hear the hissing of snakes and roaring of Lions. It is always surprising when Monkeys come down from the hills and Snatch Prasad from the hands of the devotees. All this happens because of the Tapsya of Mauni Maharaj. Though there is always crowd in the Temple but during Navratras and Chhath in winter the crowd in more and devotees light lamps in those days and are protected by vegas (priests).

More Information about Mahamaya

Respected Mauni Baba started Navrata since 1978 and began his Tapsya on the bank of Triveni near Ganesh Temple. People of nearby villages made a hut for him there. The area at that time was full of big trees and people do not dare to go there. But after Mauni Baba started his 'Tapsya' people thronged to the place. When people began to come to pay their respect to Baba and visit the temple, the renovation and beautification of Temple also started. One Lady from Gaur caste who was engaged in the services of Maharaj Jee became famous as Sabri. Mauni Baba started difficult yoga in that surrounding without being disturbed by the hissing of snakes and roaring of animals. One day after a year Mauni Baba declared that Goddesh was pleased and he is living the place to a short while. Hearing this Mrs. & Mr. Rishi Chandra Jha came to meet him. When they heard about the declaration of Mauni Baba leaving the place they began to weep. Then Baba consoled them and said that he was going to Ujjain for Kumbh and will be back within months. Baba also asked them so accompany him if they desire. The couple got the privilege to accompany. Baba for Kumbh and they came back to Dalli after a week but Baba stayed there in Ujjain.

I want to give a brief detail of Ujjain here. Ujjain is a world famous religious city. By taking the name of the city situated of the bank of Shipra only all sins evaporate. Here Mauni Baba came in the contact of Burfani Baba. Mauni Baba changed his style of Tapasya here. This city is full of glories since ancient time. Therefore this city is also known as Sri Vishala. Kalidas the famous poet, once requested and forced Meghas (The clouds) to land on this city, and to remain there in the evening. As Shiva during his tandab (dance) wears red skin of tiger he may wear you (The cloud) in confusion as your colour also become red sometime. By this the goddess Bhawani may be calm and may bless you. Kalidas also requested the clouds to roar at the time of Aarti of Mahakal, which may mix with the sound of Aarti and by that you may earn some Punnya.

The great poet was one of the nine gems in the court of great king Vikramaditya of Ujjain as was a great devotee of Shiva. Mahakal is one of the famous 12 lingas of Shiva. Mahakal is situated in the cave the Omkareshwar on its top. This temple situated at the bank of Shipra river and attracts huge crowd every time, Kalidas described the Ujjain as very rich city and wrote that gems were exhibited in such a way that it seems that all gems of Jala (water) exhausted there in Ujjain only.

Ujjain is famous for the love story of Vatsraj Udyan and queen Basabdatta and also Bhartihari and Pingla. The new religion established by Bhartrihari became famous here only. The Lord Krishna got his elementary education here in the Ashram of sage Sandipan and found a freind like Sudama. Here Mauni Baba came in contact of Sri Sri 1011 Barfani Baba, a domicile of Amarkantak. Mauni Baba accompanied Burfani Baba, went to his Ashram on the bank of Narmada and took gurumantra from him and became his disciple. He started the climax of Tapsya there for about a year.

People of Sitamarhi, Bihar (the first ashram) were not knowing the where about of Mauni Baba after Kumbha. They came to know that Brahamchari doing Yoga in the Ashtram of Kayakalpee, Barfani Dada. Father of Mauni Baba went to the Ashram and had a glimpse of him from outside only but was unable to meet him as Baba had prohibited meeting anyone. The grief stricken father blessed Baba for his Siddhi from his heart.

Barfani Dada and His Ashram
I want to give some details of Barfani Dada and his Ashram here. As Sri Narad Jee, the famous Devrishi had uttered for Lord Krishna in the following lines.

Barfani Baba was born in Dube (Brahman) family of Uttar Pradesh. He came in the contact of Dhunibale Dada Sri Keshvananda and on his advice became the disciple of late Guru Arjundas of Ramashrya elan. He touring through Haridwar, Narmada banks reached Himalaya and did Tapasya for several years. when saints had realized his attainments they named Barfani Dada as Kayakalpi. He also met Neemkaroli Baba in Brindaban and stayed there for some years. One day Neemkaroli Baba gone old. Then he declared that he would change his body and after taking rebirth he would go to Amarkantak. People/Saints say that this Barfani Baba is in this guise of Neemkareli Baba who lived there for a year. Barfani Baba is well known in the society of Saints. Barfani is acknowledged as have several Sidhi like Bal Hanuman, Adayshakti Sidhi and Gayeetri Shidhi etc. He had a deep knowledge of Harbal Medicine. The Barfani Ashram is situated on a vast land and covered with highly boundry wall. People/Saints just after a glims can understand that the Ashram is a Sidhapeeth. It is said that Respected Devendra Brahmchari Baba got all sidhies here only in the company and with the blessings of Burfani Baba.

Mauni Baba (Sri Dvendra Brahmachari) attaining all sidhis with the blessings of his guru, became famous and his face and outward appearance became as brighter as Sun. After getting Siddhi Mauni Baba came to Dalli Rajhara. He started Yagna there at Mahamanya with the help of thirty one Pandits, among them Late Yugal Kishore Jha and sri Nirala Jee of Partapgarh were famous. The yagna was full of miseries. There were nothing pre-arranged. At the starting of Muhurta a man came with all samigri and appoliged for his delay because of road Jamm. So was the case of Dakshina. One man came with Rs. 4500/- for the same. All were astonished to see that even in that Jungle everything happened smoothly. People began to hink about the Devine power of Brahmchari Baba who got everything by dint of Sidhi and Yagna was completed unhindered. After that the people thought to established a huge Temple at Rajhara with accommodation for devotees also. In 1982 the foundation and Bhumipuja of present Ram Mandir was done. Late Narmadashwar Jha, Late Manoharlal Jain, sri Rishichandra Jha and Omkarmani Shukla were present on the occasion. One young man of 18 years only, who took great pains in the construction of present Ram Mandir, after resigning his job.

He was known as Saint Vadehi Sharan. The construction took about 6 years from 1982-1988 in which Shri Ramdas and Sarda Bahen of California contributed a lot along, with local devotees. With Vedic the images of Lord Rama, Sita, Laxman and Hanuman was installed in 1988. At that time a Ramdhun was also arranged and Bhandara was organised in this Temple. On the advice of Mauni Baba, Yagyashala, Charitable Hospital, Shiva Temple and Halls for the accommodation of dvotees were also constructed. Now Mauni Baba resides here and devotees in good number gather there. All these things are illustrated here for the common man, they may take the advantage Gyanganga which may make their lives better.
